Summer Mini-Course: Introduction to Qualitative Evaluation

This mini-course aims to present the process of qualitative evaluation design and development. The main types of qualitative evaluation will be covered, as well as the most appropriate context for employing each one, taking into into project execution, evaluation goals and any other specificities. Next, the main qualitative data collection tools will be discussed, along with their applications and specificities (interviews, obseravtion, case studies, focal groups and document analysis). Methodologies for data analysis and result interpretation will also be addressed.

Duration: 35 hours.

Summer Mini-Course: Introduction to Quantitative Impact Evaluation

In this minicourse, the main goals, application and methodologies (experimental and quasi-experimental) for quantitative impact evaluation will be covered. Secondary data sources available in Brazil will be presented and possible means of obtaining primary data will be discussed, including topics on questionnaire design, sampling and data collection.

Duration: 35 hours.

Summer Mini-Course: Introduction to Monitoring and Quantitative and/or Qualitative Evaluation

This minicourse is divided into two parts. In the first one (8 hours), basic monitoring and evaluation concepts will be covered, including reasons and main tools to perform them and highlighting how to make and and interpret logframes. In the second part, the student may choose an introductory minicourse on quantitative impact evaluation or on qualitative evaluation methodologies. In both cases, topics related to the applicability of the evaluation and the main methodlogies will be covered. The student may choose among three options:

  • Introduction to Monitoring and Evaluation + Introductory Minicourse on Quantitative Impact Evaluation (20 hours)
  • Introduction to Monitoring and Evaluation + Introductory Minicourse on Qualitative Evaluation Methodologies (20 hours)
  • Introduction to Monitoring and Evaluation + ntroductory Minicourse on Quantitative Impact Evaluation + Introductory Minicourse on Qualitative Evaluation Methodologies (32 hours)

Advanced Qualification on Quantitative Methods for the Evaluation of Public Policies and Social Programs

The course aims to provide students with independence for designing and carrying out evaluations. For such, it will deepen their knowledge on applied statistics and econometrics in the context of evaluation, as well as on the collection and analysis of databases, indicators, descriptive and diagnostic analyses and the most regularly employed kinds of evaluation. There will be theoretical and practical classes included.

Target audience: Professionals seeking to deepen their knowledge on techniques for quantitative evaluation of public policies and social programs. A background on statistics and basic econometrics is desirable.

Qualification on Monitoring and Evaluation

The course aims to provide students with broad contact with all stages of the public policy and social program evaluation process. The different modules encompass the most relevant topics on the theme, such as the elaboration of a theory of change, the construction and analysis of indicators, quantitative and qualitative methodologies for the evaluation and design of M&E systems. There will also be topics focusing on components for hiring and delivering products, which will cover the comprehension and elaboration of terms of reference and calls for proposals, as well as on different ways of delivering results.

Target audience: Public managers, social program managers, professionals seeking to include M&E as regular work practices.
